Both Bahnhofplatz square and parts of St. Gallen station, in particular the subways and platform accessways, were in poor condition at the start of the millennium. Comprehensive renovation of Bahnhofplatz and the pedestrian subways was therefore urgent. The city of St. Gallen and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) decided to jointly implement the ‘St. Gallen railway station and Bahnhofplatz (BBSG)’ project. After around six years of planning and three years of implementation, the new station and Bahnhofplatz were opened in 2018. The project transformed St. Gallen station into an efficient public transport hub as well as an inviting square.
