‘Living Limmat‘
Schlieren, Switzerland
The course of the Limmat river was corrected in the 19th century, during which the channel was significantly narrowed, and the banks built up throughout. This resulted in the destruction of the floodplain over long stretches and thus to a massive impairment of the river habitat. There are also deficits in terms of flood protection. The canton of Zurich, together with the local municipalities of Schlieren, Oberengstringen and Unterengstringen, is developing the ‘Living Limmat’ project. This aims to improve not just flood protection for the highly urbanised residential area in Schlieren, but also the ecological conditions in and along the Limmat river and the recreational area along the watercourse. The total length of the project perimeter is just under 3 km.
