Expansion of the district heating network Zurich West
Zurich, Switzerland
The Josefstrasse waste-to-energy plant, which supplies district heating to Zurich West, was decommissioned in spring 2021. To ensure that the City of Zurich can continue to fulfil its obligation to supply district heating in Zurich West based on customer contracts and the regional structure plan, a new district heating connection line is being built from the Hagenholz waste-to-energy plant, which will receive a new connection structure, to the new Josefstrasse energy centre. In the first stage of expansion, the energy centre will contain three hot water boilers, each with a thermal output of 40 MW, as well as pumping stations and heat storage tanks to cover peak loads during the winter months.
TBF is planning and designing the entire electrical and I&C systems, including all high-voltage and low-voltage systems, as well as the entire building services. TBF is also responsible for coordinating the installation of all trades, including process engineering. All work is carried out during ongoing operations.
Since the district heating is largely generated with waste heat from the Hagenholz waste-to-energy plant, the expansion of the district heating supply makes a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and to achieving the goals of the 2000-watt society. The expansion of district heating is also an important building block in the implementation of the city's energy policy.
